What is a splint?

Splints are designed to alleviate the pain and damage caused by clenching of the teeth. If you grind your teeth while you’re asleep, it may help to wear a mouth splint at night.

What type of splints are there?

A Michigan splint

A Michigan splint is a hard acrylic guard custom made to fit over the biting surfaces of your upper teeth. The splint allows free and smooth movement of your jaw whilst helping your muscles to break the habit of clenching or grinding.

It is a special appliance that is custom made to fit your teeth and requires a high level of clinical skill often with a number of adjustments required. It is also successfully used in protecting the teeth from extreme bruxism and when large fillings and crowns are present

The SCi (Sleep Clench Inhibitor) Splint

The SCi reduces the intensity of the tiny muscles that open your jaw, eliminating posterior and canine contact thereby reducing clenching. It basically works by propping your mouth slightly open whilst sleeping. This lack of contact reduces the intensity grinding places on the facial muscles and creates a relaxation which can then lead to reduction in facial muscle pain.

Your dentist will be able to fully assess your specific concerns, symptoms and lifestyle habits allowing them to advise you on the most appropriate splint for you.
