We’re always recommending you see Cas, our hygienist, for a scale and polish. But why are we always recommending them and why do you have to have them on a regular basis?
It’s number one on our list of treatments, and for good reason: the prevention is ALWAYS better than the cure! A building without solid foundations will fall over, and the same applies to your teeth. It’s no good having amazing teeth but poor gum health, as your teeth will fall out anyway! Here’s what we do and why:
- Scaling:
- Plaque and Tartar Removal: The dentist or dental hygienist uses special instruments to remove plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) from the teeth, especially from areas that are hard to reach with regular brushing and flossing.
- Instruments Used: This process typically involves a number of manual scraping tools, ultrasonic devices, or a combination of both. Ultrasonic devices use vibrations to break up tartar and a stream of water to wash it away.
- Polishing:
- Smoothing the Teeth: After scaling, the teeth are polished to remove any remaining stains and smooth the surface of the teeth.
- Materials Used: A rotating rubber cup or brush and a mildly abrasive paste are usually used.
Benefits of Scale and Polish
- Preventing Gum Disease: By removing plaque and tartar, the procedure helps prevent gum diseases like gingivitis and periodontitis.
- Preventing Tooth Decay: Plaque and tartar buildup can lead to cavities; removing them helps in preventing tooth decay.
- Improving Oral Hygiene: Smoother teeth surfaces make it harder for plaque to accumulate.
- Aesthetic Improvement: Polishing removes surface stains, resulting in a brighter smile.
- Fresh Breath: Removing bacteria-laden plaque and tartar helps reduce bad breath.
Frequency
The frequency of scale and polish treatments depends on individual oral health needs. Some people might need it every six months during their regular dental check-ups, while others with more severe gum disease may require it more frequently.
So, regular scale and polishes are a vital preventive measure in maintaining oral health and ensuring the longevity of your teeth and gums.
